Barney’s Army is the affectionate name given to the John Smit Foundation, an organisation dedicated to aiding those in need.

Barney’s Army was started in 2012 with a benefit game in Durban against John Smit’s beloved Sharks team where he invited team mates from around the world to play against his team, The Sharks, since 1997.

The purpose was to set up a foundation that could in some small way give back to those less fortunate in thanks of an incredible journey as rugby player in South Africa. Since then, the NPO has helped numerous charities.

The 111 charities.

The John Smit Foundation supports three charities, described as the 111 charities: The Bobbi Bear Foundation, The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players Fund and LIV Village.

“Sunday’s ride for food was something that far exceeded our expectations, the goodwill of people not only to participate but also in donating in these challenging times was food for the soul in a time when it was most needed. I finished that ride so pumped up because of people’s generosity that I could have easily done another loop!!! Thank you to everyone involved, I am truly humbled and grateful Barney's Army can help in some small way.”
